Negril is one of the most popular and well recognized vacation spots in all of Jamaica, known for its gentle, laid back atmosphere, vast white sand beaches, and calm turquoise waters. If you're arriving at Montego Bay's Sangster airport you'll be about 45 miles from Negril, which equates to about an hour and a half bus ride, including a stop for refreshments at the halfway point. However, the hour and half equals worlds away in terms of the pace of life.
lthough a very popular tourist destination, Negril is a little different than many of the other more well-known and traveled locations in Jamaica. This may be because of its location; the shuttle ride to Negril from the airport, as mentioned above, is about an hour and a half, add that on top of the transatlantic flight required to get to the island and you can understand why weary travelers who are anxious to begin their rest and relaxation often book themselves into the closest possible accommodations. This caveat has likely played into Negril being a second choice for many and a less crowded vacation for those who intentionally head there.
As can be expected, the central attraction of Negril is the beach - it is vast, and it is beautiful. Over seven miles of inviting warm sand, gently hugged by the waves as they lap at the shore - this is, for all intents and purposes, the picture postcard image (*or would that be background wallpaper image?) that likely comes to mind when imaging what a tropical paradise should look like in person. While there are of course and endless array of distractions available to keep you occupied the entire time you're there, most visitors simply relax in the sun, reading a good book, listening to music and occasionally heading into the water for a dip or two.
Navigating the area is fairly easy. The tourist zones in Negril are separated into three distinct sections - Seven Mile Beach in Long Bay, The Cliffs and Bloody Bay. Each zone has its fair share of activities, food choices, etc., but each is also unique enough that you won't find everything to be too similar; depending on how long you're staying in Negril, its well worth your while to explore all three zones for a fuller experience.
Seven Mile Beach is actually closer to five miles in length, but the name isn't why you should be here - this beach is regularly voted to be and considered as one of the best beaches in the entire world (*let that sink in for a minute). White sand and calm waters abound here; activities and refreshments are abundant as well - parasailing, every manner of water sports involving motorized and non-motorized accessories, hair braiding, walking vendors who will be more than happy to sell you a cold drink right or a delicious offering of local food and much more are all part of the territory. While it sounds like a lot of activity, there is still more than enough space for those who aren't interested in anything more than simply lying around.
The Cliffs, by comparison, are a slight bit more private. West End Road (*you'll also hear it referred to as 'One Love' Road) runs right along The Cliffs and is the main route to get around in the area. There are many resorts along the Cliffs and all of them have immediate access to the beach and rocks via staircases that lead right out of the resorts. Jumping from the cliffs right into the water is a popular activity, but it is not recommended. There are also a number of more upscale eateries as well as some dance clubs in the area.
Bloody bay is actually the first part of Negril you'll see when arriving from the airport. Despite its violent sounding name (*which came from the area being a butchering area for whalers and their catch during the 1700s) the area is home to a number of resorts and is not bloody in the slightest. A large section of the beach at Bloody bay is still raw and undeveloped; the jungle skirts the area and comes right up to the edge of the sand. There are many vendor booths along the area - if you like to barter, this is your place. Also in the area are some prime seafood eateries that offer open air dining and the best fresh fish and lobster on the entire island.
With all of this abundant awesomeness, even the most sedate visitors will eventually want to get up and leave the beach eventually. Swimming is both relaxing and a great way of getting a bit of exercise - it will help you burn off some of the calories from all of the food and drink you've been indulging in. Snorkeling is a particularly great way to experience the water; there are plenty of tours to choose from and the examination of the local aquatic eco-systems up close is very unique and informative. For those who want to experience the water but don't want to get wet, a glass bottomed boat tour is a perfect match - you can stay dry and warm and enjoy a drink or two as many of the boats are equipped with a bar.
Navigating each of Negril's three zones and exploring them will no doubt provide any visitor a unique opportunity to experience all of the beaches, cliffs, colorful local characters, and most of all the laid back atmosphere and friendliness. Walk about and take it all in - at your leisure, of course.
