SMP At Home: Apple Picking Party | Style Me Pretty

Here in New England, it?s peak apple picking season. In fact, this is the year?s busiest day for all of those apple farms that have spent months growing their perfect red beauties. At least according to my friend Kristen. Our family has no less than six big bags of apples sitting on our counter as we speak and aside from making apple butter and pies galore, we thought it might be fun to have an apple picking party. Not in the fields, but in the comfort of our own backyard where we can put all of those shiny new apples to good use. And the result? Well, it was an absurdly adorable day with DIY goodness coming out the wazoo, all photographed to perfection by our talented friend, Rebecca Hansen.

When Jess, our resident creative genius, was mapping out the details for our party, she was really inspired by a New England, country meets equestrian vibe and wanted to make sure to capture the traditional coziness of Fall picnicing but updated with a fresh, modern design. And she wanted to DIY as much as she could because quite frankly, picnic baskets and fixins are pricey little numbers and we didn?t want to fork over a fortune to celebrate the $12 bags of apples that we picked. And here is what that inspiration morphed into!

A blue and green plaid blanket that Jess already had, a DIY picnic baskett that we?re breaking down entirely in our next post, apple delicousness and dipping jars filled with caramel, walnuts and of course, chocolate?all set the tone for the day. The goal was a mini break of adorableness and a way to celebrate our all time favorite season here in New England.

So here?s the secret of the Martha-esque hostesses around the world. The little something that always elicits oooohs and aaaahs from partygoers and that officially sets your celebration apart from the rest. It?s a little word we like to call branding. Not in the traditional sense of the word of course, but rather in a way that simply means cohesion. This apple picking party is adorable because we branded it cute. We branded the style through our choice of gracefully mismatched details, custom printed labels and jar toppers, twine and calligraphy, vintage ruler trays and miniature apple pies. An intentional, but wonderfully mismatched brand that made our little backyard picnic seem like something out of a magazine.

So today, we?re going to break that brand down for you. From the hand-stitched serveware holders that we tucked into our basket, to the labels and gingham prints that we incorporated into our food presentation and are gifting to you today, we?ve got all of the goodness you need to have a party JUST like this one. It?s picnicking done SMP style and we can?t wait to open the curtain for each of you.

Speech by SLW at CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 opening ceremony

??Speech by SLW at CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 opening ceremony

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - Following is the speech by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at the opening ceremony of CENTRAL RAT Race 2012 today (October 14):

Mr Keswick (Mr Ben Keswick, Chairman of MINDSET), Mr Pang (Mr Y K Pang, Chief Executive of Hongkong Land), Mr Chow (Mr Raymond Chow, Executive Director of Hongkong Land), Mr Yip (Mr Yip Wing-shing, Chairman of Central and Western District Council), Mr Chan (Mr Chan Hok-fung, Vice Chairman of Central and Western District Council), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to take part inthis CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 organised by the Hongkong Land. I am honoured indeed to meet, and address, such a distinguished audience comprising corporate executives from multi-national and local business firms, members from the rehabilitation sector and our younger generation.

To live in a fast-paced city like Hong Kong, keeping mental health is just as important as maintaining physical fitness.

Over the years, this meaningful event has become one of Hong Kong's signature charity initiatives and helped raise over HK$12.6 million for MINDSET to support mental health-related organisations and projects in Hong Kong and on the Mainland since 2006. May I take this opportunity to thank all the Jardine Ambassadors of MINDSET for your enthusiasm and efforts in raising public awareness of mental health issues, as well as supporting persons recovering from mental illness to integrate into society in collaboration with rehabilitation non-governmental organisations and academic bodies.

The Government is keenly aware of the needs of persons with mental health problems and their families/carers, and keeps under regular review the provision of community mental health services in response to changing demand. As you may be aware, the Integrated Community Centres for Mental Wellness (ICCMWs) have commenced service in 18 districts across the territory since October 2010.These centres provide one-stop and accessible mental health support services ranging from prevention to crisis management for discharged mental patients, persons with suspected mental health problems, their families/carers and residents living in the community.

By the end of June 2012, some 22 000 discharged mental patients and persons with suspected mental health problems received services from the 24 centres across all 18 districts.During the period, around 4 000 public education and publicity programmes were organised, benefitting more than 227 000 people. This favourable output reflected that the services have been widely supported and recognised by the public and service users.

Over the past few years, the Government has been injecting additional resources to the Hospital Authority (HA) and Social Welfare Department (SWD) to enhance the provision of mental health services. Indeed, the total expenditure of mental health services has increased from $3.39 billion in 2007-08 to $4.52 billion in 2011-12, representing an increase of 30 per cent. This year, the Hospital Authority has extended its Case Management Programme for the severe mentally ill patients to a total of 12 districts.Additional resources have also been provided to the ICCMWs to strengthen their manpower and supervisory support so as to serve more persons in need. Moreover, SWD has since 2005-06 increased the number of psychiatric medical social workers by 46 per cent to tie in with HA¡¦s various initiatives on mental health services and to assist the mentally ill persons and their families/carers to overcome the difficulties and stresses arising from mental illness.

Given the increasing demand for community mental health support services, the Government will continue to enhance the service quality and provide additional resources to meet growing service demand. In tandem, the Government will reinforce collaboration with various sectors, including the business sector, the rehabilitation sector and the local communities in promoting mental health.Last Sunday, at a kick-off event of the annual Mental Health Month, I joined over 1 500 participants from the business sector, education sector, rehabilitation sector and district councils for a Mental Health Walk from Victoria Park to Wan Chai to raise public awareness of mental wellness.Mindset is one of the supporting organisations of the event.

This week, I am most delighted to join the Rat Race - another landmark event in promoting mental health.

I am sure that with the concerted efforts of the community, we are able to make Hong Kong a truly caring and healthy city.

In closing, may I thank Hongkong Land once again for organising this very innovative and meaningful charity event, and also MINDSET for your sterling contribution to arouse public awareness on the importance of mental health.I wish the CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 every success and everyone here a memorable and fruitful experience! Thank you.

Complex logic circuit made from bacterial genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? By force of habit we tend to assume computers are made of silicon, but there is actually no necessary connection between the machine and the material. All that an engineer needs to do to make a computer is to find a way to build logic gates -- the elementary building blocks of digital computers -- in whatever material is handy.

So logic gates could theoretically be made of pipes of water, channels for billiard balls or even mazes for soldier crabs.

By comparison Tae Seok Moon's ambition, which is to build logic gates out of genes, seems eminently practical. As a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Christopher Voigt, PhD, a synthetic biologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he recently made the largest gene (or genetic) circuit yet reported.

Moon, PhD, now an assistant professor of energy, environmental and chemical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis is the lead author of an article describing the project in the Oct. 7 issue of Nature. Voigt is the senior author.

The tiny circuits constructed from these gene gates and others like them may one day be components of engineered cells that will monitor and respond to their environments.

The number of tasks they could undertake is limited only by evolution and human ingenuity. Janitor bacteria might clean up pollutants, chemical-engineer bacteria pump out biofuels and miniature infection-control bacteria might bustle about killing pathogens.

How to make an AND gate out of genes

The basis of modern computers is the logic gate, a device that makes simple comparisons between the bits, the 1s and 0s, in which computers encode information. Each logic gate has multiple inputs and one output. The output of the gate depends on the inputs and the operation the gate performs.

An AND gate, for example, turns on only if all of its inputs are on. An OR gate turns on if any of its inputs are on.

Suggestively, genes are turned on or off when a transcription factor binds to a region of DNA adjacent to the gene called a promotor.

To make an AND gate out of genes, however, Moon had to find a gene whose activation is controlled by at least two molecules, not one. So only if both molecule 1 AND molecule 2 are present will the gene be turned on and translated into protein.

Such a genetic circuit had been identified in Salmonella typhimurium, the bacterium that causes food poisoning. In this circuit, the transcription factor can bind to the promotor of a gene only if a molecule called a chaperone is present. This meant the genetic circuit could form the basis of a two-input AND gate.

The circuit Moon eventually built consisted of four sensors for four different molecules that fed into three two-input AND gates. If all four molecules were present, all three AND gates turned on and the last one produced a reporter protein that fluoresced red, so that the operation of the circuit could be easily monitored.

In the future, Moon says, a synthetic bacterium with this circuit might sense four different cancer indicators and, in the presence of all four, release a tumor-killing factor.

Crosstalk and timing faults

There are huge differences, of course, between the floppy molecules that embody biological logic gates and the diodes and transistors that embody electronic ones.

Engineers designing biological circuits worry a great deal about crosstalk, or interference. If a circuit is to work properly, the molecules that make up one gate cannot bind to molecules that are part of another gate.

This is much more of a problem in a biological circuit than in an electronic circuit because the interior of a cell is a kind of soup where molecules mingle freely.

To ensure that there wouldn't be crosstalk among his AND gates, Moon mined parts for his gates from three different strains of bacteria: Shigella flexneri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as Salmonella.

Although the parts from the three different strains were already quite dissimilar, he made them even more so by subjecting them to error-prone copying cycles and screening the copies for ones that were even less prone to crosstalk (but still functional).

Another problem Moon faced is that biological circuits, unlike electronic ones, don't have internal clocks that keep the bits moving through the logic gates in lockstep. If signals progress through layers of gates at different speeds, the output of the entire circuit may be wrong, a problem called a timing fault.

Experiments designed to detect such faults in the synthetic circuit showed that they didn't occur, probably because the chaperones for one layer of logic gates degrades before the transcription factors for the next layer are generated, and this forces a kind of rhythm on the circuit.

Hijacking a bacterium's controller

"We're not trying to build a computer out of biological logic gates," Moon says. "You can't build a computer this way. Instead we're trying to make controllers that will allow us to access all the things biological organisms do in simple, programmable ways."

"I see the cell as a system that consists of a sensor, a controller (the logic circuit), and an actuator," he says. "This paper covers work on the controller, but eventually the controller's output will drive an actuator, something that will do work on the cell's surroundings. "

An synthetic bacterium designed by a friend of Moon's at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore senses signaling molecules released by the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. When the molecules reach a high enough concentration, the bacterium generates a toxin and a protein that causes it to burst, releasing the toxin, and killing nearby P. aeruginosa.

"Silicon cannot do that," Moon says.

Purisima gets global award for 'unforgiving' campaign vs tax evasion ...

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima has been lauded by the prestigious Euromoney magazine for a take-no-prisoners campaign to combat tax evasion in the Philippines.

Among the prominent targets for tax investigations have been boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and former chief justice Renato Corona and his family.

In its Finance Minister of the Year 2012 citation, Euromoney said, ?Purisima has unleashed an unforgiving strategy to combat tax evasion and maximize revenue from corporates without introducing any new taxes or reforms.

?Purisima has worked closely with President Benigno Aquino to champion the idea that ?good governance is good economics?. Bankers in the country say he has stuck to his guns, and the country is reaping the rewards."

Purisima was informed of the award while in Tokyo for the International Monetary Fund-World Bank meetings.
?
?I?d like to especially recognize Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares who has the unenviable task of collecting almost a trillion pesos in taxes to finance government priorities, as well as Budget Secretary Butch Abad who has the equally unenviable task of selecting which among the many priorities we will finance,? Purisima said upon accepting the Finance Minister of the Year award from Euromoney.

Sin tax battle
?
Now Purisima faces a tough battle on the sin tax bill, which aims to boost government revenues by substantially increasing taxes on tobacco and alcohol.

Henares and Abad, the colleagues he cited in his accpetance of the award, also happen to be his key allies in getting Congress to reform the ?sin tax? system for tobacco products, beer and liquor.
?
Their efforts to raise up to P60 billion in recurring sin tax revenues came ?under threat in the past week when the Senate ways and means committee led by Senator Ralph Recto approved a sin tax bill that fell far short of revenue expectations and elicited dismay from the Executive and even brickbats? within the Senate.
?
?I had hoped that I would not be disappointed. But I was ready to be disappointed. I was involved in many reform measures. This one is 14 years in the making. This is one of the most difficult reforms. I had hoped that it [the Senate?s version] will be different,? Henares said.
?
Whether Aquino?s finance chief will be forgiving of the administration?s supposed allies in the Senate may be seen when he returns to Manila from Tokyo.
?
?I thank the House of Representatives for working double-time to secure the passage of this bill, vital for its potential contribution not only to state revenues, but more importantly to promoting healthy lifestyle to Filipinos,? Purisima said back in June when House Bill 5727 was approved in the larger chamber of Congress.
?
?Moving forward, we call on our dear senators to?ensure the passage of HB 5727 into law within the year keeping in mind the welfare of the Filipino people,? Purisima added.
?
He has often said that ?good governance is really good economics,? but the harvest pace of the fruits of his and other Aquino officials? labors has not been as fast as some hoped it would be.
?
Passage of the sin tax bill was arduous in the House of Representatives and while that happened all the Senate could do was wait because all revenue measures must first emanate from the House as the 1987 Constitution requires.
?
International credit rating agencies and countries that export tobacco products, beer and liquor to the Philippines have been closely monitoring the progress of the sin tax reform efforts.
?
British American Tobacco (BAT) has been urging the Philippines ?to level the playing field? by not discriminating between foreign and local brands through different product classifications and varied tiers of tax rates.
?
?Through the sin tax reform process, the Aquino Administration has taken a bold and courageous step to fix these inequalities,? BAT said in a statement.
?
The credit rating agencies keep track of the sin tax bill because of its potential revenue impact. The Malaca?ang version of the bill sees P60 billion in tax collections, but the current Senate version could rake in only one-fourth of that or P15 billion.
?
Another economic program under close watch is the public-private partnership (PPP) program, which has so far awarded only three contracts?one for a road project south of Metro Manila and two for the build-lease-transfer of 9,301 classrooms.
?
The PPP Center told GMA News Online right after the contract signing for the classrooms that two more priority projects are pending before the governing board of the National Economic and Development Authority and would be acted upon as soon as that board convenes again.
?
President Aquino had earlier identified eight PPP projects for priority action.
?
Some finance executives in the private sector attribute the current pace of the PPP to the strivings of incumbent officials to make sure that the good governance efforts will last beyond 2016, when Aquino?s single term ends.
?
Purisima led the accounting and management consultancy firm Sycip, Gorres & Velayo before then President Gloria Arroyo asked him to join her administration first as trade secretary and then later in the finance department. ? Earl Rosero/ HS, GMA News

Experienced Meeting Goer Provides Candid Presentation Tips To ...

Posted on by Joslyn O.

Today?s guest blog post is by AAA member, Kirsten Bell. Bell provides a candid approach towards her experience presenting a paper at an anthropology conference.

How to deliver a paper at an anthropology conference

By Kirsten Bell

Academic conferences, as several observers have noted, are a singularly understudied phenomenon.? One of the more profound insights on this topic is to be found in an article by Jacobs and McFarlane published in, of all places, the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning.? They note that conferences are sites where inexperienced neophytes learn how to become professionals ? how to (quite literally) walk the walk and talk the talk.?? While we learn from the practices and attributes of our individual teachers, it is only at our discipline?s most cherished events that we get to see The Anthropologist as a larger species of academic in all of his or her glory.? Thus, more than any other academic pursuit, be it fieldwork, writing or teaching, it?s at conferences that we learn how to inhabit an anthropological habitus.

At some level, we?re all aware of this.? Certainly, for those budding anthropologists who have never previously presented at an academic conference, they can be a nerve-wracking affair.?? If not careful, one can become the academic equivalent of a gauche guest at a dinner party, or the Nigel-No-Friends on the playground ignored by other students and picked last for team sports.

I learnt this lesson the hard way at the Australian Anthropological Society conference in 1997, where I presented my first paper.?? Having never previously attended a conference, much less presented at one, I turned to my older sister, a geologist, for advice.? Amongst her several pearls of wisdom were the instructions to ?use PowerPoint. Everyone?s doing it?.[1]? She then gave me her own personalized template (blue background with yellow writing, fashionable amongst scientists in the mid 1990s and heartily despised by the time it finally went out of fashion a decade later) and I diligently made up my slides, paid to get them transferred onto actual slides[2] and took the slide box with me to the conference.

The conference paper was an abysmal failure.? While my unfortunate mispronunciation of the word ?cacophany?[3] didn?t help matters, I blame the PowerPoint slides for the paper?s poor reception.? Afterwards, the academic who chaired the session politely informed me that while the use of PowerPoint might be de rigueur in scientific circles, it wasn?t at all the thing amongst anthropologists, as our complex and abstract ideas didn?t lend themselves well to bullet points on a slide.? Clearly, my fatal error was asking a geologist for advice on how to communicate at an anthropology conference, which, as it turned out, was rather like asking an ice hockey player what strategies suit competitive netball.

In light of the upcoming AAA Meeting in San Francisco, and in the spirit of offering collegial advice to a new generation of anthropologists forced to navigate the shark-infested waters that constitute the typical academic conference, I?ve compiled a list of how to present papers at anthropology conferences.? However, before I outline these tips there?s one fundamental piece of advice I need to impart.? You must disabuse yourself of any na?ve notion that conferences are about disseminating knowledge and sharing intellectual ideas.? It?s precisely these sorts of pie-in-the-sky fantasies that will get you into trouble. ?As Erving Goffman pointed out in Forms of Talk, if one?s goal is merely to transmit information, an academic talk is an extraordinarily ineffective way to do it. ?We don?t attend talks to actually learn something new but to imbibe the essence of the speaker?s identity. To quote Goffman, ?To the degree that the speaker is a significant figure in some relevant world or other, to that degree this access has a ritual character, in the? sense of affording supplicants preferential contact with an entity held to be of value? (p. 187).

This ritual character extends to the structure of academic talks themselves.? In an article on graduate student seminars, Bob Weissberg observes that such presentations are a speech event with a distinct rhetorical structure.? The same is true of a typical anthropology talk. Below I outline four key elements of a successful presentation at an anthropology conference.? Some of these elements I have used myself with a reliable degree of frequency over the years; others I have gleaned through watching (and marveling at) other anthropologists present at conferences.

1) Start with a fieldwork vignette.

This component is so obvious, so self-evident, it?s hardly worth stating, echoing as it does the standard conventions for writing an anthropology paper identified in Writing Culture.? However, I?ll say it anyway in case some of you are so green as to somehow have missed its prime importance.? You must start your paper with a vignette from your fieldwork.? It doesn?t need to relate to the focus of your paper or even make sense.? The introductory anecdote is there to serve one purpose and one purpose only and that is to authorize you, to say to the audience: ?see, I?ve done fieldwork?, which, as Nigel Barley has so eloquently observed in The Innocent Anthropologist, is your main form of anthropological street cred.[4]? Sure, it gives you endless fodder for lectures (especially the ones you?ve forgotten to prepare) and makes you an interesting guest to have at dinner parties, but one of its less recognized advantages is its ability to allow you to skip boring literary and rhetorical conventions such as actually bothering introducing your topic.

2) Name drop trendy theorists ? preferably impenetrable continental ones.

Based on the number of times I heard his name mentioned at the 2010 Australian Anthropology Society conference and the 2011 AAA conference, I?d suggest Georgio Agamben as a potential candidate.? To those of you who happen to think that Bare Life is the name of a National Geographic documentary, or who ? even worse ? don?t think the concept of homo sacer is relevant to your work, I say this.? The point of impenetrable theorists is that their concepts can be applied to anything ? their very opacity allows them to absorb whatever phenomenon you are interested in, kind of like an intellectual equivalent of a black hole that sucks up matter and then spits it back out in the form of a shiny new star.

3) Sprinkle your paper liberally with non-English words and phrases.? This is easiest done if you work in a locale where English is not the lingua franca.? But don?t ? and this is critical ? actually translate what you are saying.? Neophytes tend to worry that such tactics might be confusing, and unnecessarily alienate audience members who don?t speak the language.? These are spurious concerns based on the mistaken assumption that your presentation is designed to do anything as mundane as actually convey useful information.? Let me reiterate that your presentation is about establishing your credentials as an anthropologist.? Throwing in words and phrases in the local language without explaining them serves this function by demonstrating that you are so fluent, engaged and immersed, etcetera, etcetera, you?re not even aware when you have slipped into the local language.? In Barthian terms these words and phrases also stand in syntagmic relation (note use of strategy 2 here) to the fieldwork vignette that you will use to start your presentation.

Obviously, if you work in an exclusively English-speaking context you?re at a disadvantage here (but, of course, unless you were raised intellectually in one of those new-fangled cultural studies-type departments, you knew that already).? The only way to successfully counteract this handicap is to bump up your use of strategy 2.? Also, if you know any Latin, French or German phrases you can throw in, use them promiscuously throughout your presentation.

4) It?s important to prepare your presentation as you would any other paper ? i.e., as something to be read rather than spoken.?? I know this is the opposite of the advice any communication specialist will give you but, remember, the purpose of your paper is not to convey information but to credibly perform your identity as an anthropologist.? So what if you have to flip through a couple of pages half way through your talk when you realize that you?re running out of time and still have 5 pages to go?? This merely reinforces your cultivated disheveledness (see discussion of dress below).? Who cares if you write in paragraph-long sentences that are incomprehensible to all but the most devoted listeners?? Ultimately, the less the audience understands, the better.? That way, you will have fewer thorny questions to deal with, and you can accuse any detractors of completely misunderstanding your paper.?? Moreover, you can immediately submit it to a journal without having to rework it, thus killing multiple birds with one stone.

Finally, although not relating to the content or structure of the anthropology paper per se, I?d like to give one final word of advice on presenting a successful paper, which relates to the need to dress appropriately.? While you may think that anthropologists are above such banalities, dress is a central means through which an anthropologist communicates his or her professional identity.?? If you don?t want to take my word for it, then re-read Natural Symbols, where Mary Douglas points to the contrast between academics and stock brokers, noting the carefully modulated shagginess of the former (which, I would suggest, reaches its epitome in the sartorial stylings of anthropologists).? Therefore, you must assiduously cultivate this disheveledness, even if you heart secretly desires the perky preppiness of a Tommy Hilfiger polo shirt or the understated refinement of a Brooks Brothers suit.

The following should be avoided at all costs: suits (unless worn ironically)[5] and ostentatious bling (unless vaguely ?ethnic? or ?ghetto? in design).?? It?s worth noting that clothing also has a valuable symbolic function to perform in advertising your fieldsite, so try incorporating some subtle references in your mode of dress: for example, some sort of beaded accessory if you specialize in Native American studies, a brightly printed headscarf if you work in Africa, an intricately embroidered bag if you work in Southeast Asia, etcetera.

If you don?t work in a fieldsite that promotes the use of such items, I?d advise you to develop a preference for generic ethnic/arty clothing shops.? For example, during my PhD, on days when I was tutoring I would gravitate towards a shirt with an Indonesian-style batik pattern that I bought from an op shop for $5.? In fact, it got to the point where my sister would snigger whenever she saw me wearing it and say ?you must be tutoring today?.? Did I do fieldwork in Indonesia?? No.? But South Koreans tend to dress fairly conservatively and wearing my bright pink hanbok (note use of strategy 3 here) to teach in seemed a little excessive.

Actually, this is an important point: there?s a line between dressing like an anthropologist and crossing all sorts of other potentially unsavory boundaries.? Lean too far towards the arty side (especially if your taste runs towards clean, simple lines) and you run the risk of being seen as a sociologist.? Too disheveled and you risk being mistaken for a homeless person (please refer to the ?Prof or hobo?? quiz for valuable lessons on how to avoid crossing this line http://individual.utoronto.ca/somody/quiz.html).? Also, beware of going ?full ethnic?.?? No anthropologist wants to be accused of cultural appropriation or grotesque mimicry.

While I think you?ll find these strategies of great benefit when presenting papers at anthropology conferences, tread with caution before attempting to import them into your performance repertoire at other types of conferences.? If, for example, you regularly attend health or medical conferences, you may find your cherished symbols subject to an unexpected resignification.? Trust me on this, anthropological forms of cultural capital do not translate well into other settings.[6]

Acknowledgements: This piece was informed by conversations with fellow anthropologists too numerous to name here (and who?d probably prefer that I don?t make the attempt).? However, I?m particularly indebted to Eric Mykhalovskiy ? not actually an anthropologist at all, but a sociologist who shared some invaluable insights about the differences between anthropology and sociology conferences and who introduced me to the ?Prof or Hobo? quiz.?? Needless to say, Eric and the unnamed anthropologists bear no responsibility for the final content of this paper.

Biography: Kirsten Bell completed a PhD in social anthropology in Australia at James Cook University (2000).? She is currently a Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia and has also held faculty appointments in anthropology departments at Macquarie University in Australia and the University of Northern Colorado in the USA.? Her current research interests are located in the anthropology of biomedicine and public health.

[1] I can conclusively say that NO ONE at that time was using it in anthropology.? I may very well bear the dubious honor of being the first anthropologist ever to use it at an academic conference.

[2] Readers born after 1985 probably don?t have a clue what I?m talking about.

[3] Not CACK-oh-fanny, it turns out, but the rather more counter-intuitive ca-COFF-any.

[4] Of course, as Barley was well aware, your street cred varies substantially depending on where you did your fieldwork.

[5] I?m not entirely certain what an ironically worn suit looks like, but if you have to ask it?s probably best not to make the attempt.

[6] For example, while a messy office is part of the cultivated disheveledness of any anthropologist worth his or her salt and demonstrates a busy and creative mind at work, in medical settings you will invariably be labeled disorganized, erratic and, yes, incompetent.

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that this RP is a remake of my old one. I really liked the old one, and sadly it just kind of died... so I'm trying again. Some things have changed, but for the most part the general story line is still the same ;) I will also have new characters for this RP. Thank you!!!

Yes you and I did do an RP of my making. The Kingdom of Secrets: Demon of Grimes. Didn't last long though I don't think. I mean the chars were good, story was going smoothly, but it probably died due to the absence of one of the other players. Not you, you were attentive. I'll get working on a char ASAP. :D

EDIT: Done! :D

So far, we know the new Nexus will be made by LG and feature some very impressive specs under the hood. There's also a possibility other manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, and Sony will make Nexus-branded devices in time for the holidays.

We included a few photos of the LG Nexus below. You can head to Onliner for even more >

Terrorism risk greatest for subway/rail commuters

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Despite homeland security improvements since September 11, 2001, subway and rail commuters face higher risks of falling victim to terrorists and mass violence than frequent flyers or those engaged in virtually any other activity. And while successful criminal and terrorist acts against aviation have fallen sharply, those against subways and commuter trains have surged. These are among the findings of a new study by Arnold Barnett, George Eastman Professor of Management Science at MIT's Sloan School of Management, who will deliver a presentation titled "Has Terror Gone to Ground?" at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix on October 15.

Barnett found that during the period 1982-91 deliberate acts of malice caused 1,327 deaths worldwide among air travelers, but none on subways/commuter trains. But between 2002-11, the pattern reversed: there were 203 aviation deaths and 804 among subway/rail commuters.

Further statistics depict the implications of this reversal. A recent subway/rail commuter in the Developed World has faced twice the annual death risk of a frequent flyer, while the risk per mile traveled by subway/commuter rail was ten times as high as by air. Criminal and terrorist acts account for about 8% of the overall death risk of air travel, but they account for 88% of the mortality risk on subways and commuter railroads.

Barnett contends that this reversal does not imply that aviation security measures are less necessary; instead, it might suggest that the success of such measures has displaced criminal/terrorist activity to other venues like commuter rail systems.

Barnett paid special attention to the events on 9/11. He noted that the number of air passengers killed on that day -- at 232 -- was similar to the death tolls in later bombings on the commuter rail systems of Madrid and Mumbai, and in an arson attack on a South Korean subway. What made 9/11 singularly horrible was the enormous death toll on the ground (2,700 killed).

Subsequent measures to secure airline cockpits may be the reason that there have been no further attacks that used commercial airlines as weapons. Indeed, Barnett notes, the most publicized of the recent air-terror plots -- the shoe bomber, the underwear bomber, the liquid-explosives plot, the ink-cartridge bombs -- have reverted to trying to blow up airplanes, the primary tactic that was used before 9/11 with greater success.

Barnett notes that even among subway/rail commuters, the risk of falling victim to terrorism or mass violence was very low in the last decade, at approximately 1 in 2 million per year. But because successful terrorism has such far-reaching consequences, Barnett argues, the prevention of rail terrorism warrants high priority. Stopping attackers once they reach stations and trains has proved difficult, so the most realistic way to prevent attacks might be to uncover and thwart terror plots at earlier stages. It was good intelligence work that averted a planned 2009 attack on the New York subway, not security measures at Times Square or Grand Central Terminal.

Cardinals beat Braves 6-3 in disputed wild card

ATLANTA (AP) ? Talk about a wild card.

This one was just plain wild.

Chipper Jones played his final game. The Atlanta fans turned Turner Field into a trash heap after a disputed infield fly. And the St. Louis Cardinals did what they always seem to do in October.

Celebrated another postseason triumph.

Matt Holliday homered and the Cardinals rallied from an early deficit, taking advantage of three Atlanta throwing errors ? the most crucial of them by the retiring Jones ? to beat the Braves 6-3 in a winner-take-all wild-card playoff Friday.

In the eighth inning, there was more crazy throwing, this time by an irate crowd that littered the field to protest an umpiring decision that went against the Braves. The Cardinals fled for cover, the Braves protested and the game was halted for 19 minutes while workers cleared up all the beer cups, popcorn holders and other debris.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny was asked if he'd ever seen anything like it.

"Not in the United States," he said.

Major League Baseball executive Joe Torre said the protest was denied. St. Louis advanced to face Washington in the best-of-five division round, beginning Sunday at Busch Stadium.

The Braves are done for this season, the recipients of another heartbreaking loss in the playoffs.

The 40-year-old Jones is all done, period. He managed an infield hit in his final at-bat but threw away a double play ball in the fourth, which led to a three-run inning that wiped out Atlanta's 2-0 lead behind Kris Medlen.

"Ultimately, I feel I'm the one to blame," Jones said.

But this one-and-done game will be remembered for the eighth, when a disputed call on a fly ball that dropped in short left field cost the Braves a chance at extending Jones' career.

The Braves thought they had the bases loaded with one out after the ball fell between two fielders. But left-field umpire Sam Holbrook called Andrelton Simmons out under the infield fly rule ? even though the ball landed at least 50 feet beyond the dirt. When the sellout crowd of 52,631 realized what had happened, and a second out go up on the scoreboard, they littered the field with whatever they could get their hands on.

"It was scary," St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina said.

Holbrook defended the call, even after he looked at the replay.

"Once that fielder established himself, he got ordinary effort," he said, referring to shortstop Pete Kozma calling for the ball, then veering away at the last moment as left fielder Holliday drifted in. "That's when the call was made."

Braves president John Schuerholz apologized for the actions of the crowd, saying a "small group of those fans acted in a manner that was uncharacteristic and unacceptable." The barrage left Holbrook fearing for his safety.

"When cans are flying past your head, yeah, a little bit," Holbrook said.

The stoppage only delayed the inevitable. When play resumed, Brian McCann walked to load the bases but Michael Bourn struck out to end the threat. Dan Uggla grounded out with two aboard in the ninth to finish it, leading to one more wave of trash throwing as the umps scurried off the field ? probably feeling a lot like those replacement NFL refs who caught so much grief.

The infield fly is a complicated rule, designed to prevent infielders from intentionally dropping a popup with more than one runner on base and perhaps get an extra out.

No one could ever remember it being applied like this. And, after past postseasons dotted by contested calls, this play will certainly lead to another slew of October cries for more instant replay.

"I was under it," Kozma said. "I should have made the play. I took my eyes off it. I was camped under it."

This is what some fans feared about a one-game playoff ? a disputed call determining a team's fate for an entire season, even with two extra umpires added for postseason games.

Jones refused to pin this loss on the umps.

"That one play didn't cost us the game. Three errors cost us the game," he said. "We just dug ourselves too big a hole."

Holliday homered in the sixth off Medlen, who had been baseball's most dominant starter over the final two months. The Braves had not lost a start by the diminutive right-hander since 2010 ? a streak of 23 games, the longest in modern baseball history.

But this is the postseason.

This is when the Cardinals shine.

St. Louis stunningly made the playoffs a year ago at the Braves' expense, ralllying from 10? games back in the wild-card race to pass Atlanta on the final day of the season. The Cardinals on capture the championship, winning four straight elimination games while upsetting Philadelphia, Milwaukee and, finally, Texas, with the most improbable victory over all in the World Series.

St. Louis was expected to fade after slugger Albert Pujols signed with the Angels and longtime manager Tony La Russa retired. And, indeed, the Cardinals wouldn't have made the playoffs without a change in the format, adding a second wild-card team in the each league. They finished six games behind the Braves during the regular season, only to hand them more misery in the postseason.

The Braves haven't won a playoff round since 2001. Since then, they've gone 0 for 7 ? including six decisive losses at Turner Field.

David Ross, starting in place of the slumping, ailing McCann, had the place rockin' in the second when he launched a two-run homer into the left-field seats off 16-game winner Kyle Lohse. It looked as though Ross had struck out to end the inning, but he yelled for time just before Lohse delivered the pitch. Umpire Jeff Kellogg hopped out from behind the plate waving his arms while Ross swung and missed.

That call worked out for the Braves. Ross homered on the next pitch.

But the Cardinals have been in this position before.

Carlos Beltran led off the fourth with the first hit of the game off Medlen, a bloop single to right. Holliday followed with a hard shot to third base, and Jones made a nice backhanded scoop. The crowd cheered, expecting a double play. That turned to gasps when Jones' throw to second base sailed over the head of Uggla, winding up in right field. Instead of having no one on with two outs, Medlen and the Braves faced second and third and no outs.

The Cardinals made Atlanta pay, as they always seem to do in October. Allen Craig, the replacement at first base for Pujols, lined a double off the left-field wall, cutting Atlanta's lead to 2-1. Molina followed with a groundout that brought home another run and moved to Craig over to third. He trotted home on a sacrifice fly by David Freese, the hero of last year's postseason.

The Braves totally fell apart in the seventh, and Freese was right in the middle of things again. He led off with a routine grounder to Uggla, who bobbled it briefly, then unnecessarily rushed his throw to first. It wasn't close, the ball sailing off behind home plate while Freese took second. Daniel Descalso bunted pinch-runner Adron Chambers over to third, and Chad Durbin replaced Medlen.

Durbin got what he wanted from Kozma ? a grounder to the drawn-in infield. But Simmons bobbled the ball and hurriedly threw it all the way to the backstop as Chambers slid across head first to make it 5-2. Kozma took second on the miscue, and he came all the way around to score on another ball that didn't get out of the infield. Matt Carpenter's bunt down the first-base line was fielded by the third pitcher of the inning, Jonny Venters, who missed a swipe tag and, with his back turned, failed to notice that Kozma kept right on running to make it 6-2.

"We played to win the game," Molina said. "They played to lose the game."

Lohse got the win, allowing six hits and two runs in 5 2-3 innings. Medlen, who went 10-1 during the regular season, surrendered just three hits and two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings. But he gave up five runs in all, most of it none of his doing.

Jason Motte earned a save by getting the final four outs, taking over after the delay.

NOTES: The Braves outhit the Cardinals 12-6 but left 10 runners on base. St. Louis stranded only two. ... Lohse (16-3) and Medlen had a combined record of 26-4 during the regular season. The cumulative win percentage of .867 was the highest ever for opposing postseason starters, edging the .850 mark of California's John Candelaria (10-2) and Boston's Roger Clemens (24-4) in the 1986 AL championship series.
