Things obviously aren?t starting the way the Broncos expected when they signed quarterback Peyton Manning.
But they also know from his track record it?s too soon to panic.
The last time Manning started 1-2, in 2008, he was named NFL MVP and the Colts went 12-4.
So now, the Broncos are still trying to adapt the offense to what he?s able to do.
?That?s our job, and we did it last year [with Tim Tebow]. You do what your players do best,? Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy told Albert Breer of the NFL Network. ?So it?s a combination of everything now. We?ve packaged together the Indianapolis stuff, and blended it together with our system. It?s what I?ve done. It?s what Peyton?s done. There?s not a number or percentage of one or the other, because we go into every game with a different plan, new wrinkles based on the opponent. And we have our core foundation in place.?
As head coach John Fox did earlier in the week, McCoy insisted the problem wasn?t one of arm strength.
?We have no concerns about [his arm],? McCoy said. ?To me, his arm is fine now. I wasn?t around him before, so to compare where he is now to back then, that?s really for him to say. But his arm is fine.?
The obsession with Manning?s arm strength misses the point. The Broncos don?t need the old Peyton, they just needed an upgrade over Tim Tebow, which Manning would probably be with his left arm. Fox has won a lot of games with a lesser degree of quarterback before, so there?s no reason to think this pace will continue.
