Loch Leven cafe

Savour the culinary delights of RSPB Loch Leven ? at no extra cost to your conscience, thanks to the organic ingredients used in many of the recipes.

?

The nature reserve, based just off the A90 near Kinross, is one of the few eating establishments in the area to offer food made on site from sustainable ingredients. The range of tasty treats includes scones and flatbread, as well as soups and a variety of drinks ? in flavours such as raspberry, elderflower, lemonade and tropical juice.

?

The RSPB caf? also has triple certified coffee, milk and sugar; this means they are organic, fair-trade and rainforest friendly.

?

Lynn Burns, catering supervisor, at RSPB Loch Leven, said, "It's great working on a nature reserve, especially with such a lovely view from the cafe, and now I'm learning that the organic ingredients we use in our food can make a difference to the wildlife we see out of the window.? I really enjoy it when customers come back and tell me how much they've enjoyed the food!"

?

Catering Manager at RSPB Loch Leven, Dougie Rutherford, said that the main benefit of using organic ingredients is that it has a positive impact on biodiversity. He credits the use of natural ingredients - which have had limited pesticide use in their production - as accounting for a 50% increase in flora and fauna as opposed to inorganic methods.

?

?Everything works as part of an ecosystem and we?re very aware of that here at RSPB Loch Leven?, said Dougie. ?You only have to look out of the window of the caf? to see the amazing wildlife on our doorstep and we want to protect that through using the best ingredients to create delicious food.

?

?You can come along to our reserve to watch the wildlife and then pop into the caf?, safe in the knowledge that your food was not produced using techniques that cause problems to the environment that you?ve just been appreciating. We?re helping to take some pressure off nature whilst giving our customers an enjoyable caf? visit.?

?

The RSPB caf?, based just two miles east of Junction 5 on the A90, is open daily from 10am until 4pm. Telescopes are present in the caf? which are trained on the loch, and visitors are encouraged to make use of these facilities. Thee is also a gift shop which stocks a wide range of books, gifts and binoculars for all levels of interest.

?

Wheelchair access to the caf? and shop are provided and there are child friendly facilities to hand for families and school groups.

?

RSPB Scotland?s work at Loch Leven is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage, SITA Trust, Perth and Kinross Quality of Life Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund, Biffa, Dundee City Council, Falkirk Council and Stirling Council and a range of Scottish charitable trusts.? RSPB Loch Leven is part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve (NNR).
