Most people dont know that mushrooms are not classified as a plant or vegetable. Mushrooms have high water content and a low caloric content. In fact, a mushroom is made up of 80% to 90% water. They are rich in riboflavin, niacin, and potassium.
Many uses of mushrooms
- Cooking. Mushrooms may not be a member of the plant kingdom but you can find them in the vegetable section when you look for them in the groceries and supermarket. They are dubbed as the ?meat of the vegetable world?.
- Medicinal properties. Mushrooms are also used for treating certain diseases. Some substances found in mushrooms like glycoproteins and polysaccharides are used to improve the immune system and to prevent tumor growth. Mushrooms are also discovered to be possible treatments for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, inflammation, and diseases caused by virus, bacteria, and other parasites.
- Dyeing. Mushrooms are used for dyeing natural fibers such as wool and cotton. Mushrooms have chromophores that create vivid colors. In fact, you can create all color shades in the color spectrum using a mushroom dye.
Types of edible mushrooms
- White mushrooms or button mushrooms are the most popular edible mushrooms.
- Portobello mushrooms are also among the most commonly used mushrooms for cooking. They are usually grilled or stuffed with different ingredients to enhance the flavor. Portobello mushrooms can grow up to 6 inches wide and are considered as meat substitutes in some recipes.
- Oyster mushrooms or Pleurottes do not taste like oysters but look like one. They are often cooked with few ingredients because of their delicate flavor.
- Shitake mushrooms are mostly grown in East Asia. The stem of shitake mushroom is tough and it is ideal for making stock. Otherwise, you need to chop the stem very fine to make them easier to digest. You can also use dried shitake that you can buy in cans in order to add flavor to your dishes.
- Chanterelle mushrooms or Girolles look like inverted umbrellas. These mushrooms have a tangy flavor and aroma. To bring out the flavor, you should saut? the mushroom in butter and garlic.
- Truffles are some of the most expensive mushroom types. A pound of white truffle mushrooms can cost as much as $2700 while a pound of black truffle mushrooms can cost as much as $390. These are grown in Northern Italy and Southern France.
