The Best Keyboard

What is the best keyboard to use with your computer? Well that is a loaded question due to everyone using their computer for different things so what is the best keyboard for one person is not the best for another. Some people just surf the internet and read email while others are very competitive gamers looking to get every advantage over their friends when they play. Looking at things objectively, I think we can find some similarities between the needs of all types of computer users. Here is what I come up with so far.

1. Programmable Keys - Programmable keys can be used for many different things. You can program a key to insert your signature in an email, you can program a key to start some soft of combo move in a game and you can even program a key to open a special program you use often like email or your favorite MMO. No matter what you use your computer for I think everyone could benefit from programmable keys

2. Sub-$100 Price - I don't think the majority of users need a keyboard over $100. Sure some of them are very nice but in the end, couldn't you get the same usable features from a keyboard that costs less than $100? The only time I think that going over $100 might be required is if you feel you need mechanical keys due to the feel and resistance of the keys. Over the last several years, keyboards use a small rubber piece to offer resistance to the keys but before that, we used little metal springs. I personally love the mechanical spring-loaded keys and the way they feel. Sadly, most of the time they also make a lot of noise compared to the rubber keys. You can get special mechanical gamer keyboards like the Logitech 710+ that has very quite keys but you are looking at around $140.

3. USB Port - I know most of you are plugging things into the front of your computer but once you start using a keyboard with its own USB port, you will fall in love with it. I no longer have to reach over to my PC or even worse, bend down to the ground because the older PC's have their posts on the very bottom. Another nice feature is to have an audio jack on the keyboard. If your PC is hidden in a cabinet or under the desk like mine is, having a headset cord wrapped around your desk is just an accident waiting to happen. With the audio jack on the keyboard, I have plenty of cord for the headset and I can easily unplug my headset and put it away without getting under my desk.

4. Light-Up Keys - This one is kind of on the border-line but most people I know don't have enough light next to the computer and often spend the majority of time on it after dinner when the sun is low or even down. I thought it was cheesy too when I first saw a light-up keyboard but after trying one, I really like it. It makes finding keys much easier and I don't feel that I spend as much time looking down hunting for a special key. I know I'm not supposed to be looking at the keyboard but I cant help it. It gets really tough when I'm trying to throw a grenade and I hit the weapon reload key by mistake.

In the end, the best keyboard is really up to you and how you use the computer. I know many people are still playing with older keyboards and if you are, that's OK. Just be sure to check out some of the newer features mentioned above if you get a chance. You may find they make using the computer easier. As for me, I really like the Logitech G110. If you are in the market for a new keyboard, give this one a look.

If you would like to see some of the newest keyboards, you can see pictures of them at my Best Keyboard page. The current prices are shown and there are even links to them on Amazon so you can see reviews from all the people who purchased them.

I am an avid computer gamer and love all the gaming hardware out there. I often show people new features that are available and watch their face light up as they realize that spending $50 on a new keyboard makes a ton of sense when you think about it. You handle the keyboard more than anything else, shouldn't you spend a little money there and stop using that 5 year old beat up one?
