Cricket New Zealand adopting the suicidal route - Opinion
Controversies are a norm with the Asian teams as their players and officials are often involved in different scandals. Whereas, some of the other major cricket playing nations like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England are known for their extremely professional behaviour on and off the field.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) however, has started to follow the pattern of some of the sub-continental teams, taking some extremely surprising decisions, which has hampered the Black Caps? progress at the highest level of the sport.
One of their most disastrous decisions in recent past was made earlier this month, as the middle-order batsman, Ross Taylor, was controversially sacked from the national team?s captaincy ahead of the on-going tour of South Africa.
The cricketer from Wellington was offered to retain the Test captaincy; however, Taylor refused to share responsibilities with Brendon McCullum and made him unavailable for the series against the Proteas instead.
This is quite an ironic decision because Taylor succeeded Daniel Vettori as the Kiwi skipper after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in the sub-continent and was tipped to be a long-term choice for the Black Caps.
New Zealand did not do a bad job in Test cricket under Taylor as they defeated Australia in the Hobart Test last year and won against Sri Lanka at Colombo in the recently-concluded encounter, squaring the series on both the occasions.
The Kiwis however, failed to deliver the goods in the shorter formats of the game under Taylor?s captaincy but one must keep in mind that New Zealand?s resources have been very thin in the last couple of years, with the country not producing as many quality cricketers as it did in past. ??
Martin Crowe, the former New Zealand captain and one of the best batsmen of their history, in his article for ESPNcricinfo, slammed the NZC for their short-sightedness and feels that the move to demote Taylor is absolutely baseless.
?Over the last week NZC destroyed the soul of Ross Taylor, easily our best player. They continue to strip the worth from players and, therefore, as an organisation, they have definitely become worthless,? he wrote.
The 28-year-old cricketer has already scored more than seven thousand runs at highest stage of the sport, with the help of 14 centuries and is considered by many as the most reliable New Zealand batsman these days. Like Crowe, a number of cricket pundits believe that the Kiwis will miss Taylor?s services against South Africa, who happen to be one of the best teams in international cricket presently.
Not surprisingly, the sacked Kiwi captain is disheartened by the ill-treatment of the NZC but vows to make a return to the global stage in future. While speaking to the media after his demotion, Taylor revealed that he plans to spend some time with his family at home and is currently not in a frame of mind to take part in competitive sport.
?It's been a pretty difficult five months for me. It's a chance to get away from it, spend some time with the family. I don't believe I can give 100% to the game at this time,? the talented player expressed. ?Cricket is my life and my passion. I love the game and I love playing for my country. But taking a break is the right thing for me right now.?
Let us hope that Taylor is able to get over with the controversy sooner rather than later as the New Zealand team desperately needs his services.
