(AP) ? If dresses could talk, this dark navy, figure-hugging velvet number would have the best stories to tell.

Princess Diana wore it on state visits, at royal banquets and most memorably to a gala dinner at the White House in 1985, when she took to the dance floor with Hollywood star John Travolta.

The Victor Edelstein gown will go under the hammer at a vintage fashion auction in London in March, along with nine other of Diana's lavish evening dresses. In total, Kerry Taylor Auctions say the sale is expected to raise more than 800,000 pounds ($1.2 million.)

The dresses, all in the signature 1980s look ? padded shoulders, puffed sleeves, crushed velvet ? are snapshots in the princess's glamorous, jet-setting life.

The sale is set for March 19.

Financial Media Wakeup Call: The Big Disconnect | The Reformed ...

  • Joshua M Brown
  • February 26th, 2013

I was having a discussion with the CEO of one of the largest financial media companies in the country yesterday.

A few points I made:

1. The population of DIY investors who want to actively trade their own stocks each day and need news that caters to them is small and shrinking (their estimates are that the number is 3 million people in the US). To focus primarily on this segment misses the bigger picture - the 8.6 million millionaire households that truly need help with longer-term planning, not stock ideas. See the below slide from Chip Roame's Tiburon CEO Summit last year:

SLIDE MILLIONAIRES

2. But this is how most financial media properties are geared - everyone's doing sites and apps and content about which stocks to buy and sell and how to react to economic / earnings news. It's pretty crowded and when people try to stand out in crowds they tend to shout, post things in ALL-CAPS and engage in hyperbole.

3. The real wealth in this country (US investors have $59.4 trillion of net worth excluding their houses) doesn't give a shit about whether or not they should buy Netflix - they want content, insight and information that helps them with planning, portfolio construction, asset allocation and true investing - not just trading, trading, trading.

4. The financial media is irrationally addicted to trading stories because they have urgency and they're entertaining, even if ultimately unsatisfying to the 90 million Americans who are trying to figure out what to do with their wealth. There is a relentless focus on analyst research calls, upgrades and downgrades, economic data releases, merger and acquisition buzz, hedge fund activity etc. This is all highly interesting and I personally enjoy both consuming and creating this type of content as well. But it should not be the only thing on the web / airwaves. It is disproportionately dominant when compared to its actual utility for the majority of the audience. There is a huge content arbitrage opportunity here.

5. This is very much a junk food versus eating your veggies conundrum and we know who usually wins these tug-o-wars in real life. It's not that people don't need to know the macro news or the state of the markets each day - it's that this stuff is really only relevant to them as it affects their portfolios and, by extension, their lives. Financial content and journalists can and should do more to connect the two in their reporting.

6. Some media outlet, print or television or radio, is going to figure this out and exploit it. Many media companies do not make the distinction between investing and daytrading, but they should. Making the investing process fun and exciting is not hard to do with the right talent, writers and format. Focusing on process versus outcomes will also engage professionals to share this content and participate in its manufacture as well.

7. The advertisers - from luxury auto companies to ETF arms dealers - will beat a path to your door once you establish dominance in this market. Here's what is at stake in dollar terms (also from Roame's presentation):

SLIDE ASSETS

8. There are thousands of potential content creators from the asset management and wealth management verticals who are essentially untapped and more than eager to participate in this sort of thing.

9. The news of the day is only part of the key to appealing to this audience - portfolio analytics and measurement tools to help them track where they are in their retirement goals - along with risk management gauges - will give people a reason to check back in and engage if you can't get them in via trading ideas or "breaking news".

10. Most market commentary - by definition - is stale within hours of being produced or published. I have personally created over 8000 pieces of it and believe me, nobody will ever read 99% of what I've done prior to last week unless I'm accused of a triple homicide and claim to have buried clues to the crime within my old posts.? But content that deals with real investing as opposed to "trade the news" is a lot more evergreen. Given this reality, you would assume the media would find it more profitable to emphasize this kind of stuff...

I think the existence of this disconnect is fascinating, so many people's mindsets are locked in this late-90's paradigm of stockpicking as a hobby. And yet even a casual glance at the fund flows over the last few years would tell you that the Boomers have moved away from this kind of activity while the newer generations of investors (X, Y, Millennials) have never been interested in it.

Anyway, someone's going to figure this out and do it right. Maybe.

Below, a quick and very incomplete list of financial media outlets, people and sites that emphasize investing:

Rosh Chodesh Society Conference Instructs and Inspires ...

Affiliates of the Rosh Chodesh Society (RCS, The women?s division of the?Rohr?Jewish Learning Institute) gathered from all?around the world?for a day of pedagogical training and inspiration. The second annual Rosh Chodesh Society Conference, held at the Jewish Children?s Museum, also offered RCS?s 130 affiliates the opportunity to bond and meet with fellow instructors who teach RCS?s professional curriculum in their communities.

Described by director Shaindy Jacobson as fueling a ?global spiritual revolution, one Jewish woman at a time,? each year?s Rosh Chodesh Society course is taught?for seven consecutive months throughout the year, on or during the week of Rosh Chodesh.

At the RCS Conference, experienced and novice?instructors alike expressed deep appreciation for the presentation by?veteran RCS instructor?Mrs. Rochel Holzkenner, an RCS affiliate in Las Olas, Florida, who focused on pedagogical tips and techniques for introducing guided discovery into their classrooms.

Mrs. Holzkenner is well-known among RCS affiliates for her masterful pre-recorded ?pilot? classes, which many affiliates use to help them prepare for their own classes. One of her central pieces of advice was to keep students on their toes, to?be a ?guide on the side? rather than a ?sage on the stage.?

?Sometimes our nature is to simply tell others information, to be the ?sage on the stage.?? said Mrs. Holzkenner. ?But if we allow our students to draw conclusions on their own, to have their own ?aha? moments rather than imposing information on them, that can have a much more powerful and lasting impact on how they absorb and internalize that information.?

Mrs. Rochel Flikshtein of Wilmington, Delaware, also addressed the conference, sharing her experience as a new affiliate, and expressing her gratitude for what Rosh Chodesh Society has helped her accomplish in her community through its professional curriculum, multimedia, marketing materials, and the online forum on which the affiliates support each other and share creative ideas for enhancing each lesson.

?I have to admit that I was hesitant to start teaching Rosh Chodesh Society. I wasn?t sure if the women would be interested in serious learning. But Rosh Chodesh society has exceeded my expectations. It?s had a lasting impact on the women in my community, whether by inspiring them to say brachos on food or to be more patient with their children. Through learning Torah with these women, I have been able to connect with them in a much deeper way. I have also become a better teacher and have expanded my reach in my community. It is a great?z?chus?to be a part of such an amazing group of women educators spreading light throughout the world,? said Mrs. Flikshtein.

Mrs. Carolyn Hessel, director of the Jewish Book Council and the most powerful woman in book publishing, made a?surprise guest appearance, sharing a brief message about her love of Jewish books and a new Jewish book club she has initiated.

As a surprise gift, each affiliate received a copy of the discourse Lehavin?Inyan Rosh Chodesh,?translated as?Feminine Faith?as?part of the?Chassidic Heritage Series published by Kehot Publication Society, which?discusses?the spiritual significance of?Rosh Chodesh and its relevance to women. The gift was sponsored in honor of the Rebbe?s shluchos.

The conference concluded on a (literal) high note with an inspirational, original song composed by Mrs. Jacobson. To listen to a [male] recording click on the play tab in the video below:

ZTE Grand Memo hands-on

ZTE Grand Memo.

ZTE, like local rival Huawei, is desperately trying to establish itself as one of the bigger international smartphone players, focusing more and more on high-end "hero" devices. To that end, at a very businesslike (and rather awkward) Mobile World Congress press conference this week, the company revealed the Grand Memo. A 5.7-inch Galaxy Note-class device, the Memo incorporates high-end internals and a massive 5.7-inch 720p display.

As per ZTE's presser, the Grand Memo runs Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, though ZTE says the chipsets used will vary depending on country. (Update: ZTE staffers on the show floor tell us that the demo units on display are running Snapdragon S4 Pro (8064) chips, and that several different versions of the Memo will be available, including the Snapdragon 800-powered model announced earlier this week.)

For what it's worth, the company also had an NVIDIA Tegra 3-based Grand Memo on show at its MWC booth, however that device was unstable and extremely hot to the touch.

Other hardware notables include 2GB of RAM (1GB on the S4 version), 16GB of storage, 4G LTE support and a 13MP rear camera. The physical hardware of the Memo is standard smartphone fare -- a black slab with a plastic back and three buttons down below. On the back, a plastic battery cover. We saw several different back covers on the Grand Memo demo units at the show -- glossy, textures and matte versions in white and various shades of blue. Overall, the hardware is perfectly serviceable, if not outstanding.

Head past the break for more first impressions, along with more photos and video.

HP Slate 7 preview: HP?s return to tablets is better than expected

HP Slate 7 Hands OnHP Slate 7

My first reaction when I learned HP (HPQ) was going to build an Android tablet was, ?Dear God, why?? But after playing around with the tablet a bit and seeing its super-low price point, I?ve concluded that HP?s new Slate 7 is actually a pretty solid effort for the company?s foray back into the tablet world. Let?s start with the price because it?s the most obviously appealing part of the tablet at a rock-bottom $169. What makes this clever on HP?s part is that it can offer the cheap tablet as almost a throw-in to its PC customers who would be interested in owning it as a complement their new computers. So not only is HP undercutting the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 price-wise, but it?s also creating an opportunity to package its tablet to its existing customers as a nice add-on.

[More from BGR: Samsung is just trolling us now, and it?s not alone]

So OK, we know the price is nice but what about the tablet itself? While the Slate doesn?t measure up well against the best Android tablets or the iPad mini, it does show some promise for a first-time entry into the market. I found that the Slate 7 had a solid build and that its compact size that felt snug in your hands. Unlike Sony (SNE), HP seems to understand that making a tablet enjoyable to hold goes beyond simply making it feel light ? having rounded edges and a soft-touch texture on the back panel make it vastly better from a practical standpoint than Sony?s boxy and awkward Xperia Tablet Z.

[More from BGR: Firm says 90% chance BlackBerry 10 flops]

On the downside, the Slate 7?s display is not at all good compared to the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7, with a resolution of just?1,024 x 600 pixels that really does look dull compared to what we?ve come to expect from smaller tablets. Additionally, the Slate 7 runs on a?a dual-core 1.6GGHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor that is a demonstrably inferior piece of hardware than the?quad-core Tegra 3 processor used by the Nexus 7.

All the same, I wasn?t expecting to be blown away by HP?s first attempt at making a tablet since its ill-fated TouchPad project imploded, so I consider the Slate 7 a solid first attempt by HP to dip its toes into the cheap Android tablet market. Whether the company is at all successful in selling budget Android tablets depends on whether it uses this foundation to build something better in the future.

Too Many Sleepless Nights Can Actually Shut Down Important Genes

While it's easy enough to brush off a few sleepless nights with a pot of coffee and the occasional desk-nap, you may be doing more harm than you realize. According to a new study from Surrey University, snagging less than six hours of sleep per night can actually shut down genes that play a key role in the body's process of self-repair. More »

Seth MacFarlane Wasn't a Terrible Oscars Host After All

Minutes into his opening monologue as host of the 2013 Oscars, Seth MacFarlane cracked a joke about the best oicture nominee, Django Unchained. "This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence," he began. "Or, as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie." While the audience laughed uneasily, MacFarlane voiced what many were thinking about the host: "'That's what we were afraid he would do,'" he quipped. "That's as bad as it gets, if it makes you feel any better!" he tried to assure viewers (and censors).

Rachel Griffiths to star in NBC's 'Camp' comedy

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Rachel Griffiths is going to "Camp" it up on NBC.

The "Brothers & Sisters" actress will star in the network's upcoming series "Camp," from "Deception" duo Liz Heldens and Peter Elkoff.

Aptina unleashes 1080p and 4K mobile sensors, entire point-and-shoot segment cringes

Aptina unleashes 1080p and 4K mobile sensors, entire pointandshoot segment cringes

Hear that? That's the sound of the entire point-and-shoot camera industry bracing for yet another blow. As smartphone cameras mature, it's becoming ever more difficult to convince consumers to use anything other than their phone outside of special occasions where ILCs or DSLRs are necessary. Aptina has a lot to do with that. Here at Mobile World Congress, the sensor outfit has announced its 12 megapixel and 13 megapixel mobile image sensors, aimed squarely at next-gen flagship phones that ought to be coming out in Q2 or Q3 this year. The smaller 1.1-micron pixel construction is the standout feature, with the AR1230 capable of capturing 4K video at 30fps as well as 1080p video at up to 96fps. The AR1330 throws in electronic image stabilization support at 1080p, while snagging 4K UHD and 4K Cinema formats at 30fps.

Over on the tablet PC / TV front, the AR0261 is a new 1080p-capable sensor that's destined to redefine what a front-facing camera can accomplish. It relies on a 1.4-micron pixel, and should have no issues capturing faces at up to 60fps when using its 720p mode. Furthermore, Aptina promises that this guy can work with applications involving gesture recognition and 3D video capture, but sadly, no OEMs are coming forward just yet with concrete plans to include it.
